A Modern History of Japan: From Tokugawa Times to the Present, Third Edition, paints a richly nuanced and strikingly original portrait of the last two centuries of Japanese history. It takes students from the days of the shogunate--the feudal overlordship of the Tokugawa family--through the modernizing revolution launched by midlevel samurai in the late nineteenth century; the adoption of Western hairstyles, clothing, and military organization; and the nation's first experiments with mass democracy after World War I.

	Andrew Gordon Lee and Juliet Folger Fund Professor of History, Director, Reishauer Institute of Japanese Studies Professor Gordon teaches courses on modern Japanese history with a primary research interest in labor, class and the social and political history of modern Japan. His most recent book, Fabricating Consumers, examines the making of the modern consumer in 20th century Japan, with a particular focus on the sewing machine. He is currently working with colleagues in Japan and the United States to create a digital archive of Japan’s March 2011 disasters.
